First Greens Grown
So, I’ve grown my first microgreen for my business. It’s called Amaranth and it’s a grain that grows into beautiful red microgreens that have the smell and taste of beets. My first client is someone who has helped me on this path of growing organic food. Tami Purdue of Sweet Peas Urban Gardens will be using my amaranth, sunflowers, and basil microgreens for her weekly CSA bags, markets, and restaurants. I lived with Tami on and off for 4 years as a WWOOFer. If you’re not familiar with WWOOF, it stands for Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms. So, I lived on Tami’s urban farm and helped with farm tasks that needed to be done like feeding the chickens, planting seeds, weeding, building beds, and also growing and harvesting microgreens, among other things. I learned a good amount of how to grow microgreens while living there and now I use that knowledge for my business.
My next crop that will be ready to harvest in a couple days is the sunflower shoots. Another product that Tami will be using from me. Starting June, my sunflower shoots will be on the food at The Optimist Raleigh, which is the coffee shop I work at as assisstant manager. We will be using sunflowers on a salad and basil on the avocado toast. Stay tuned for more news and updates throughout the spring!
